La Closerie Saint Martin
La Closerie Saint Martin is situated in the listed hamlet of Les Roches Saint Paul, a part of the commune of Ligré, surrounded by vineyards and fields. The local stone with which the castles of the Loire Valley and most of the houses were built is called tufa. It is a soft white sandstone, one of the most characteristic features of the region.
Our buildings once formed part of the priory of Les Roches Saint Paul, a branch of the abbey of Corméry. The oldest parts date back to the 14th century, the most "modern" ones to the 17th century. Two buildings shelter a leafy green courtyard and the former horse barn is now our dining room, also offering a cosy corner for reading or having a drink.
Hidden from view, underneath the courtyard, the old stone quarry can be found. It is now a magnificent vaulted cellar and wine cave, complete with a historic bread baking oven and an open bucket well. Take a journey back through time and discover this magical place; it is where we have pre-dinner drinks if you have booked dinner with us.
